When I was a child, my perspective on beauty was heavily skewed toward man-made structures. I was captivated by the impressive skylines of cities like Chicago and New York City, believing them to be the pinnacle of aesthetic appeal. Growing up in a more suburban environment, surrounded by mundane landscapes, I didn’t find much to admire in open prairies or mountainous terrains. My limited exposure made me think that the only remarkable sights could be found in the urban centers, which were the places I eagerly sought whenever possible.

However, I matured. And my appreciation for the natural world deepened significantly. One pivotal moment occurred when I stumbled upon a breathtaking post on social media featuring Lake Louise. It is a stunning hamlet nestled in Banff National Park, located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. The vibrant turquoise waters surrounded by towering peaks looked so surreal that I initially dismissed it as the product of artificial intelligence or digital manipulation. I couldn’t fathom that such beauty existed in reality.

Intrigued, I conducted a thorough search and discovered numerous stunning photographs that confirmed this place was indeed real. Feeling an irresistible urge to experience it for myself, I planned a trip to Lake Louise. The anticipation built as I imagined standing before the majestic landscape I had only seen online. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by an extraordinary scene that truly felt like stepping into a painting.

Traveling to Lake Louise

Traveling to Lake Louise from Chicago, or really any city in the United States, is a simple yet exciting journey. Your adventure begins with a flight to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where the airport code is YYC. If you’re departing from Chicago, United Airlines offers nonstop flights to Calgary, making it a convenient option for travelers. I’ve also heard that American Airlines has similar flights available. In my case, I found a more affordable fare on United, which prompted me to choose that airline for my trip. The flight lasts approximately 3.5 hours, so to make the time more enjoyable, I highly recommend downloading a few good shows or movies from your favorite streaming service before takeoff. This way, the flight will seem much shorter, and you can relax while immersing yourself in some entertaining content.

After arriving at Calgary International Airport, you’ll need to go through customs. Based on my experience, the customs process was quite efficient and hassle-free. I have a Nexus card, which allowed me to quickly scan it at the kiosk, answer a few straightforward questions posed by the customs officer. Then, I was on my way without any complications. After customs, you’ll proceed to the car rental area. It is conveniently located at the airport for most major car rental companies. Although it may require a bit of walking, the airport signage is very clear and easy to follow. After what felt like a ten-minute stroll, I finally reached the Hertz Rental Car counter, where I picked up my vehicle—a Chevy Malibu.

Before hitting the road, it’s essential to consider your cell phone connectivity in Canada. If you’re an Xfinity Mobile customer, you can take advantage of an international travel option known as the Global Pass. It costs $10 a day and provides you with unlimited data, texts, and calls. Since each mobile carrier has different policies, I recommend checking with yours before you travel. Upon arriving in Canada, I received a welcoming text message from Xfinity, and shortly thereafter, my phone began functioning just like it does at home, allowing me to stay connected seamlessly.

Once I was in my car, I plugged in my phone to enable Apple CarPlay and typed “Lake Louise” into the navigation system. I won’t go into too much detail about my lunch, but I did make a stop at Chick-fil-A, which is notably the only one in the entire city of Calgary—definitely a unique find!

While enjoying my meal, I set the navigation for Lake Louise and began the scenic two-hour drive there. The journey is primarily along well-maintained interstates, making it easy and pleasant to navigate. Just a quick tip: distances and speed limits in Canada are measured in kilometers, so keep an eye on the signs. You might see speed limit signs indicating “110 km/h,” so be sure to adjust your speed accordingly as you enjoy the beautiful Canadian landscape along the way.

Driving to Lake Louise was an enchanting experience. As I set out from Calgary, I noticed many similarities to Denver, Colorado. Both cities are situated in flat areas, bordered by the majestic Rocky Mountains to the west. The journey toward Lake Louise begins on these expanse flatlands, providing a smooth drive as the road gradually ascends into the heart of the mountains.

As I approached the Rockies, I was delighted to find several designated lookout points along the highway. These areas are perfect for taking a break from driving and capturing stunning photographs of the rugged mountain landscapes. For someone like me, who hails from the Midwest, witnessing these dramatic peaks for the first time was truly awe-inspiring and a sight I will never forget. Upon entering Banff National Park, I came upon a tollbooth where visitors are required to purchase a park pass. The fee was approximately $8 USD and grants access for a full 24 hours. This pass was well worth it, as it allowed me to explore the park’s breathtaking scenery.

After getting my pass, I continued my journey. I passed through the charming town of Banff. It is known for its vibrant atmosphere, delightful shops, and inviting restaurants. It is definitely a place I wanted to explore on my next visit. Finally, as I made my way to Lake Louise, I found ample parking options close to the lake. After securing my vehicle, I ventured onto a well-marked trail that leads down to the waterfront. The walk was invigorating, and I could feel the excitement building as I approached the iconic turquoise waters of Lake Louise. The views were absolutely breathtaking, and I took my time soaking in the natural beauty that surrounded me, creating memories that I will cherish for years to come.

As I stood there, I watched the golden rays of the sun gently peeking through the rugged mountaintops, casting a warm glow over the shimmering, frozen lake that lay majestically before me. The stillness of the scene enveloped me, and I felt an overwhelming sense of calm wash over me. In that serene moment, it seemed as if all the struggles and challenges of everyday life had momentarily paused.
