TORONTO, ON — Often times, we can get so caught up in what’s around us – we forget there’s a world outside of the cities and states in which we live. Traveling internationally can be a lot of fun, but there are a few things you’d need to do to ensure your plans go accordingly.
Get a passport – what are you waiting on?
While we’re in the middle of spring, you can go ahead and go to the nearest post office and take a picture and apply for the First-time Adult Passport Book & Card – for $165. Additionally, there’s a $35 execution fee plus the USPS will charge for your photo. Some people will tell you it’s cheaper to take the photo at a convenience store like Walgreens and while that might be true – just take care of everything at the post office – so it’s done right the first time.
As of the time of this writing, the processing time is 8-11 weeks. Click here for everything you’ll need to get your passport. While you’re passport is being created you can focus on the next step.
Get a foreign fee free credit card
Every nation has its own currency – which means a US $100 bill isn’t the exact same in other nations. A Mastercard or Visa branded credit card are generally accepted all around the world. Additionally, this will help with any and all transactions you make.
For example, I’m currently in Toronto and CAD and USD aren’t the exact same. However, I’m using my credit card, and I’m able to keep up with exactly how much I’m spending and using with every swipe. So having a credit card like this is essential.
Personally, I think using a credit card for you everyday purchases and paying off that balance with the money in your checking account is the best way to run a budget – but that’s another conversation for another day.
Pending on how long you’ll be out of the country – get some cash and convert it to that nation’s currency to be able to tip accordingly. I remember when I went to Cancun for the first time, and there was a helpful staff member at the hotel. I wanted to tip him but only had $500 in US cash – and it was all hundreds. I learned in that moment to carry smaller bills to be able to show my appreciation for people’s help.
Does your wireless carrier allow for international data roaming, texts and calls?
Now that you’re preparing to leave the United States, it is important to check with your wireless carrier about charges you may incur when using your phone abroad. You may think – well I’ll just use wifi. However, keep in mind, if you plan on doing a quick search or using an app for navigation – all of that is data. If you do not have an international plan/pass with your wireless carrier you may have an expensive phone bill waiting for you in the mailbox.
When traveling out of the country, have a full understanding of how much it’ll cost to use your phone. You don’t want to find yourself spending unnecessary money because you didn’t follow this simple yet critical step.
You’re not in America anymore – Respect the laws of the land
Yes – our country isn’t perfect but you’ll be surprised what’s legal here isn’t legal elsewhere. You might’ve heard of the woman who was arrested in Dubai for screaming. I believe she’s at home and safe now – however that could’ve been a scary situation for her.
Point being made – understand the laws of the land when you go out of the country. I heard in Canada – you could get in big trouble carrying pepper spray on you. So it’s crucial for you to research the do’s and don’ts of the country you’re going to so you won’t get banned or worst.
Have fun and make new experiences
I’ve been here in Ontario for less than 24 hours and got a chance to see downtown Toronto, Niagara Falls, and went to the casino – I would have more money if I didn’t go there but hey – it is what it is. My point is – you don’t have to go somewhere for days, weeks, or months to have fun and make new experiences. Live in the moment and enjoy your trip.
Do the steps above and have a great time. Then come back to this site and tell us all about it.
