Two Breakfasts, One Incredible Dessert: A Food Lover’s Weekend in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — If you’re a foodie, you know New Orleans is legendary for its restaurants—but trust me, there’s always something new to discover. For my sister’s birthday, I couldn’t wait to explore the Big Easy through its ever-evolving food scene and hunt down some fresh flavors I hadn’t tried before.

This definitely isn’t my first food pilgrimage to New Orleans. If you’ve been following my adventures, you might remember my deep dive into Bobby’s Burgers at Caesars—let’s just say, the cravings are real.

This weekend, my taste buds led me to Mother’s Restaurant at 401 Poydras St.—an iconic spot I’ve heard locals rave about for its all-day breakfast. I was on a mission to try two of their signature morning dishes.

Stepping into Mother’s, you instantly get why it’s a New Orleans institution. There’s an energy that’s impossible to ignore—conversation bouncing off the walls, the aroma of slow-cooked meats filling the air, and servers weaving through the dining room with plates piled high with Southern comfort food. I hadn’t even tasted a bite yet and already knew I was about to have a moment.

Friday morning’s breakfast special was a feast fit for a king—or at least two very hungry travelers. My plate overflowed with creamy cheese grits, pillowy scrambled eggs, thick slabs of ham, and golden, buttery toast.

The ham? Absolute showstopper. We’re talking thick, juicy slices bursting with smoky flavor—nothing like the flimsy deli-style stuff you get elsewhere. The eggs were soft and cloud-like, and those cheese grits? Buttery, rich, and comforting in every bite, perfectly cheesy but never over the top. Add in the crisp, golden toast, and you’ve got the kind of breakfast that makes you want to linger over every forkful.

Naturally, I was so blown away that I had to come back the next day—somebody had to do the research!

This time around, I went for Mother’s Legendary Debris served over cheese grits. (Pro tip: always trust the local favorites!)

If you’ve never had debris in New Orleans, you are missing out—seriously. Imagine slow-roasted beef, shredded and swimming in its own savory gravy, melting in your mouth with every bite. When that gravy seeps into those dreamy cheese grits, it’s pure comfort food magic. Rich but never heavy, perfectly seasoned so you don’t have to reach for a single shaker.

One thing became clear fast: Mother’s does not do small portions. Every plate could easily feed two, so come hungry or be prepared to tote leftovers back to your hotel (no complaints here!). You will not leave hungry—promise.

But trust me, the foodie adventure didn’t end there.

For dessert, I wandered over to Mr. B’s Bistro—famous for its bread pudding, and for good reason.

I’ve sampled bread pudding all over the country, but nothing comes close to this.

The bread pudding came out warm, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that melted right down into every nook and cranny. That hot-and-cold contrast? Unbeatable. Every bite was soft, rich, and full of deep vanilla and cinnamon flavor, with buttery sweetness and a warm sauce that soaked in without ever turning mushy.

No exaggeration—it was hands-down the best bread pudding I’ve ever tasted.

Weekends like this are why New Orleans will always be one of my top food cities in America. Whether it’s a breakfast that could feed a family at Mother’s or an epic dessert at Mr. B’s, this city turns every meal into a full-on experience.

Planning a trip to the Crescent City? Put Mother’s Restaurant and Mr. B’s Bistro on your itinerary. Come hungry, because in New Orleans, the best memories are often made around the table.
