MINNEAPOLIS — When you ask someone if they’ve ever been to the Twin Cities, they’ll tell you, “It’s too cold up there” or “I’d like to visit the Mall of America.”
They may not realize that the average temperature in June, July, and August is about 80 degrees. Additionally, some may be unaware that this vibrant metropolitan area rivals other places like Chicago in terms of transportation, diversity, and attractions.
Yes, the Twin Cities are known for their harsh winters, but after reading this, you’ll want to visit and experience Minneapolis-St.Paul for yourself.
Transportation is Simple in the Twin Cities
When evaluating the Twin Cities, I love that a light rail train runs constantly to and from Downtown Minneapolis and the Mall of America—in Bloomington, Minnesota—from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
Most people coming here are more than likely going to those places. Now, if you’re going to the state’s capital, St. Paul, there isn’t a train that runs directly from the airport. However, you can take the light rail to Minneapolis and connect to the Green Line to go to St. Paul. Also, there are bus connections at the Mall of America that will take you across the metro, which includes St. Paul.
The other thing I admire about the Twin Cities is the skyway system. Both downtowns have above-ground connection tunnels (well, skyway) that connect most of the buildings and businesses without having to step outside. This creation is genius — being able to go from building to building and not worry about the weather.
There are some drawbacks, such as the Minneapolis Skyway not being available 24 hours a day. But neither are most businesses downtown, so that’s not a factor.
There’s A Lot to Do in the Twin Cities
The Twin Cities have a little something for everyone — whether you like shopping, gambling, or clubbing. The Mall of America is an attraction within itself — with up to 500 stores. Additionally, there’s an aquarium at the mall, and you can go rock climbing. In summary, the options are endless.
What’s interesting about The Cities is that’s not the only mall in the area. My favorite outlet mall is Twin Cities Premium Outlets down in Eagan, Minnesota, which is less than a ten minute drive from the MOA. So, if you’d like to go shopping but isn’t a fan of the large crowds… you can do so at other malls around The Cities.
If sports are you thing, you’ll love the fact that the Twin Cities have all five pro teams — four of them playing in Downtown Minneapolis. The Minnesota Wild play over in nearby St. Paul. When I was in Minny for Memorial Day weekend, I enjoyed catching the Wolves vs Mavs in Game 3 at Tom’s Watch Bar. The atmosphere on the corner of Sixth Street and Hennepin Avenue was immaculate.
Speaking of Hennepin Avenue, there are several bars and clubs for every demographic, so you’ll have plenty of nightlife options. The Cities are known for their rooftop bar scene too. I had a blast at Rooftop at Hewing Hotel on Washington Avenue in the North Loop.
When you’re not bar hopping or catching a Twins game this summer — perhaps you’d like to enjoy the outdoors. Just like its Midwest neighbors, the Twin Cities have beaches. Additionally, there are plenty of parks around. I’ll be honest because of the cicadas here in Illinois, I was apprehensive about exploring the outdoors in The Cities. However, a quick Google search will show you why you should venture out.
Lastly, I’ll tell you to check out Mystic Lake Casino. It’s in the southwest suburbs (not on a train line) but you can take a shuttle bus out there. You may have to call and find out its pick up locations. I know one there’s one that runs between the Mall of America and the casino. But Mystic Lake is a whole vibe. Make sure you go out there for a good time — even if you’re not a gambler.
To conclude, the Twin Cities have a lot to offer. Think of it this way — it’s like going to Chicago but a cheaper option with similar quality options.
Minneapolis-St. Paul gets a 8 out 10 rating from me — highly recommended.
