This year has seen a notably active hurricane season, with a significant number of storms developing in the Atlantic. Numerous travelers have expressed concerns about handling their travel plans in the event of a hurricane. In today’s discussion, we will elucidate the protections at your disposal and offer guidance on the appropriate course of action should you encounter such circumstances.
My Flights Delayed — Now What?
Travelers whose flights experience significant delays are protected by regulations. According to USA Today, if a flight is significantly delayed for reasons within the airline’s control, several major airlines including Alaska, Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and United will rebook passengers on the same airline at no extra cost. Additionally, they will provide a meal or meal cash/voucher for delays lasting three hours or longer from the scheduled departure time. This information is based on the Department of Transportation consumer dashboard.
Furthermore, some of the largest airlines in the country, such as Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue, and United, have made additional commitments. These include rebooking passengers on a partner airline at no extra cost, offering complimentary hotel accommodations for passengers affected by overnight delays, and providing complimentary ground transportation to and from a hotel for passengers affected by overnight delays.
It’s important to note that Allegiant, Hawaiian, Southwest, and Spirit do not rebook travelers on partner airlines, but they do offer the other aforementioned benefits.
USA Today writes, Alaska, JetBlue, and Southwest provide credit or a travel voucher if the delay is more than three hours from the scheduled departure time. Frontier offers rebooking on the same airline and a meal, but does not provide hotel accommodations, transportation, or booking on other airlines.
My Final Thoughts
It’s important to always contact your airline directly when weather impacts your travel. This holds true in any situation. I have had basic economy flights before and was able to have them changed. Travel credit cards offer many protections as well and should be considered. Lastly, never accept “no” for an answer. Sometimes calling back or asking for a supervisor will work in your favor.
