United Airlines Changes Its Basic Economy Policy With a Questionable $65 Pre-Authorization to Check-in Online

CHICAGO, Ill. — United Airlines has implemented rigorous limitations on its basic economy fares over an extended period. As part of these restrictions, passengers are not permitted to bring a carry-on bag, which contrasts American and Delta’s policies.

The airline enforced this by requiring passengers with basic economy tickets to check in with an agent at the airport rather than online.

In a recent policy change announced to take effect on Tuesday, August 6, United Airlines is allowing basic economy passengers to check in online or via the mobile app before arriving at the airport. However, as part of this change, passengers traveling on basic economy tickets must provide a credit card and agree to a $65 charge if they bring a full-size carry-on to the gate.

It’s important to highlight that passengers who have checked bags when traveling with United on a basic economy ticket are already familiar with the $65 fee. In addition to the bag fee, which is usually around $40 depending on the number of bags, there is also a $25 gate handling fee for bringing a carry-on bag to the gate to be checked.

According to The Points Guy, an internal memo explained that United has been implementing this at its Chicago hub for several months, with “great” results.

My Opinions on This Announcement

I still dislike basic economy fares because of all the restrictions, but saving money is always a good thing for travelers. I wish the Chicago-based airline would allow passengers to have a carry-on bag like Delta and American.

I believe the online and app check-in options offered by United will be beneficial for those planning quick trips, as they no longer have to deal with the hassle of checking in at the airport. However, if you’re flying on a basic economy ticket, it might be better to choose another airline unless United gets rid of the no carry-on bag policy.
